All About Adaptogens

As a society we are super busy and productive, but when we don’t take time to slow down our adrenal glands pay the price, and so do the rest of our bodies.

Adaptogens are a wonderful class of herbs and mushrooms that help support healthy adrenals so that we can be more resilient in times of stress. Members of this unique class of herbs and roots have been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. They are used to restore energy, stamina, immunity and help our bodies more effectively cope with the demands of everyday life. They can help enhance physical performance, libido and also improve mental clarity. To put it simply- adaptogens help you adapt.

Some favourite adaptogenic herbs are:

  • Withania somnifera also known as Ashwagandha: (this one is a personal favourite). Ashwagandha is great for nervous exhaustion and is frequently used in those dealing with long-term stress. Its calming effect helps ease anxiety, insomnia and nervous tension. Furthermore, it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps regulate the immune system.
  • Astragalus: This herb is known particularly for buffering the effects of stress on our immune system. It is nourishing in nature and stimulates the growth of antibodies, increases white blood cells, and thus increases resistance to infections. It is also known as an energy booster- helping to build stamina and vitality.
  • Panax Ginseng: this adaptogen is known to increase physical and mental efficiency and produces significant improvement in physical fitness particularly when under stress. Compared to Siberian ginseng, this one is more invigorating and stimulating. It is used to uplift and activate, and is commonly used in conjunction with other herbs.
  • Eleutherococcus senticosus also known as Siberian Ginseng: This herb is great for general weakness and for those dealing with prolonged stress and fatigue. I like to think of eleutherococcus as a great tonic for type-A personalities or for those who work long hours and skimp on sleep (e.g. during exams or big work projects). It can also improve immune function in those who experience frequent infections. Siberian ginseng is very safe and less stimulating than panax ginseng.
  • Rhodiola Rosea: Rhodiola helps with stress-related mental and physical fatigue and is great for those who feel depleted. Rhodiola balances cortisol levels in your body, raising or lowering it as needed. This herb helps relieve anxiety and combat depression, and it can also support a healthy heart and brain function.
  • Holy Basil also known as Tulsi: Holy basil is one of the less stimulating adaptogens, but should not be underestimated. This herb can help strengthen memory and concentration. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, making it especially useful for those with diabetes. Because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, holy basil is also known for it’s anti-aging benefits.
  • Schisandra: this herb is a potent general tonic, decreasing mental fatigue and enhancing physical performance. Many people take this herb to increase energy and it’s especially popular with athletes since it boosts nitric oxide levels in the body. The berry counters stress by reducing the levels of stress hormones in the blood. It also helps promote recovery from stress and protects our liver from toxins.

It’s important to understand that not all adaptogens work the same. Some help energize the body and are great for people who feel worn out, lethargic and fatigued. Others have a more calming or sedating effect, and benefit those in overdrive. Certain adaptogens have a stronger effect on the immune system and boost our body’s ability to fight infection. Because every adaptogen works a bit differently, the herb should really be matched to the individual, and this is where naturopathic medicine shines. Naturopathic Doctors use a personalized approach and can help you select the right adaptogen to fit your needs.
